In wet-area zones, low-voltage fittings are typically required under local electrical codes. This is enforced through electrical inspection rather than being a matter of preference. Off-grid installations run on 12V battery systems by design, making 12V the only option without an inverter.

Outside these mandatory applications, 12V is specified by choice in architectural lighting, under-cabinet installations, and display lighting where the low voltage allows slimmer, more discreet fixtures.

Do I need a driver for 12V bulbs?

If the 12V bulb is being installed on a mains-powered circuit, yes: a driver or transformer is required to convert household power to 12V. If the bulb is going into a system already running at 12V, no driver is needed.
