This guide covers installation of all three Dulora MR16 spotlights: the Sunset Dim MR16, FlexBeam MR16, and 7W MR16 LED Spotlight. All three use a GU5.3 bi-pin base and operate on 12V AC via a compatible low-voltage transformer.
Before you start
Replacing an existing MR16 globe in an existing fitting is generally something a homeowner can do safely, but installing or replacing the transformer itself involves 240V mains wiring and must be carried out by a licensed electrician.
Before handling the globe, confirm your transformer is compatible with Dulora MR16 spotlights. The full list of tested and confirmed transformers, drivers and dimming systems is in our MR16 Compatibility article. A downloadable PDF version is also available from the Downloads tab on each MR16 product page, which is handy to have on site or to pass on to your electrician. Some transformers require a minimum of 2 lamps connected to function correctly; check this before installing a globe on a single-lamp circuit.
What you need
A compatible 12V AC transformer, a Dulora MR16 globe, and a compatible trailing-edge LED dimmer if you want dimming functionality.
Step 1: Switch off the circuit
Turn off the power at the switchboard for the lighting circuit you are working on. Do not rely on the wall switch alone; the transformer may still carry voltage.
Step 2: Allow the fitting to cool
If the fitting has recently been in use, wait at least 10 minutes before handling the globe or fitting.
Step 3: Remove the existing globe
Grip the globe firmly and pull it straight out of the GU5.3 bi-pin socket. Some fittings have a retaining spring or clip; release this first if present.
Step 4 (FlexBeam only): Set your beam angle before inserting
If you are installing the FlexBeam MR16, this step is the critical one. The beam angle must be selected before the globe is inserted into the fitting. Once the globe is seated in the lamp holder, the twist-lens ring is no longer accessible from the front.
Rotate the lens ring to your chosen position: 24° for a tight, focused accent; 36° for general-purpose spotlighting; or 55° for a wider wash across a surface or bench. The ring clicks into position at each setting. For the Sunset Dim MR16 and 7W MR16 LED Spotlight, this step is not applicable; both have a fixed 36° beam.
Step 5: Insert the globe
Align the two pins with the socket and push the globe firmly in until it seats fully. Handling the globe with a clean cloth is good practice, though these LED models are less sensitive to skin oils than traditional halogens.
Step 6: Restore power and test
Switch the circuit back on at the switchboard and test the globe. If a dimmer is installed, run through the full range to check for smooth, stable output with no flickering or buzzing. If you notice any flickering, refer to the troubleshooting section below.
Dimming
All three spotlights are fully dimmable with a compatible trailing-edge LED dimmer. The Sunset Dim MR16 will automatically shift from 2700K warm white at full brightness down to 1800K candlelight warmth as you lower the dimmer, with no additional setup required. The FlexBeam MR16 and 7W MR16 LED Spotlight hold their set colour temperature across the full dimming range.
IP rating and fixture suitability
All three spotlights are rated IP20 and are designed for dry indoor use. They are suitable for glass and enclosed downlight fittings. They are not suitable for wet areas or exposed outdoor locations.
Troubleshooting
If the globe flickers or does not illuminate after installation, work through the following checks. Confirm your transformer is on the Dulora MR16 compatibility list. If your transformer requires a minimum of 2 lamps and you only have one connected, this is the most common cause of flickering. Confirm your dimmer is compatible with LED loads.
