LED Bulb Bases Explained

Understand E27, B22, E14, GU10 and more, so you can match every LED bulb to its perfect fitting with confidence.

When buying a new LED bulb, the base (also called the socket or cap) matters just as much as the shape or brightness. Choosing the correct base ensures the bulb fits safely and works efficiently with your fixture.

Common LED Base Types

  • E27 (Edison screw, 27mm, 240V): the most common base in Australia, standard lamps and pendants
  • E14 (small Edison screw, 14mm, 240V): candle/golf-ball bulbs, chandeliers, small lamps
  • E12 (candelabra Edison screw, 12mm, 240V): imported decorative fittings, ornate lamps
  • B22 (bayonet cap, 22mm, 240V): the classic push-and-twist fitting in most Australian homes
  • B15 (small bayonet cap, 15mm, 240V): decorative fittings like chandeliers and sconces
  • GU10 (twist-lock, 10mm pin pitch, mains 240V): downlights, spotlights, no driver required
  • GU5.3/MR16 (bi-pin, 5.3mm pin pitch, 12V): recessed downlights, requires a transformer
  • G4 (bi-pin, 4mm pin spacing, 12V): under-cabinet, display, caravan lighting
  • G9 (loop-pin, 9mm pin spacing, 240V): compact decorative fittings, pendants, wall lights

Choosing the Right Base

  1. Check your fitting for the base code printed on the socket or old bulb.
  2. Match voltage: mains fittings use 220-240V, G4 and GU5.3/MR16 use 12V.
  3. Confirm cap size: E12, E14, E27 and B15, B22 are not interchangeable.
